Christmas and Life on the Farm

I decided to write a bit about Christmas on the farm that seems closer to the real value of Christmas to me. Most of these memories are not my own and shared with me by the one who began these blogs. So I will be a vessel to put them in print.As I share on my blog, "Reflections" I have decided to write somewhat her legacy and life.Using G-d's "tarnish" remover to wipe off the garbage of others of instability and of low standing with G-d.

I will be using some art illustrations of Bob Artley and Lew Hudson. Bob growing up around Hampton, Ia on a farm,farming as a way of life,and both working for the Worthington Daily Globe.Both artists and Bob living the life so well can tell one what it was like better than I. I will also include some of my own photos as well.

At the bottom of this post I have placed a few books interest involving these gifted men with a heart for life and rural living.
This will be an interesting intertwining of two families realities and life. So here goes part 1.

At a time when I am so sick these memories carry me far and make me think of better time. Living rural has always drawn me as an adult and even patterned the home I lived in after what I grew up in. I hope with the loss of that home another will again be in existence.

Living life rural could have it's hardships and struggles but yet we had something most today would not living in the city and in fragmented families. We had each other and a bond that was not breakable even though we attempted to beat the heck out of each other at every turn it seemed.
With 5 kids we were always competing for time and attention. But of who I don't recall. Mom was preoccupied with cooking, cleaning, making us mind and the like. Abba was off driving truck for L.R. Faulk. One of the best parts of the day was when he brought his truck home and we plowed each other with huge dirt clods. Ouch, it hurt sometimes to get smacked in the head with one. Of course, that was the purpose-"to hit the target".

For a really short time we lived in a small town. I remember I got in more trouble than just being rural, exploring, finding unusual animals, pestering the pigs and taking walks in the woods, getting wet in the pond when I knew I was gonna be in trouble for it, tangling my abba's fishing line all up so he had no choice but to throw the whole thing away. Interestingly he never got mad at me for trying to fish and messing up the line.

Really all year I remember the love and warmth of G-d even in what seemed chaos around me at times. A note that is important is that at this time in life Jewishness was not full stage and center at all in our lives.

Santa Claus was a big deal to me and I have fond memories of waiting for him to come the night before Christmas. We brought out the decorations from the attic. Decorated the tree the day after Thanksgiving and put up wreaths, decorations and ornaments in every room of the house. We covered the stair case railing with fresh pine boughs and the fireplace mantel as well. Also adding candles and lights as well as a candle in each window. We looked forward to and enjoyed lighting the candles at dusk.
There is something about the fragrance of a fresh Christmas tree in the house that I still enjoy to this day.

Santa Claus at Christmas was important to me too and I read and re-read stories of "The Night Before Christmas". I knew we were too poor to have anything much in the way of gifts but Santa Claus, the tree and all the decorations were so magical to me.

I hated being cold and we never seemed to have enough blankets and the ones we had were seemingly thread bare. The house was cold even with two wood stoves and a cook stove. Somehow we survived anyhow.
I might not have liked the cold but the snow especially when we had record snowfalls was the greatest.

I might skip around a lot so just enjoy the journey of the story.

I always enjoyed getting to go to my bubbe's house and spend several days. She always had a steady supply of Squirt pop in a bottle and hershey bars. In addition, a steady supply of chores that needed help with too.
Thankfully in the winter months I wasn't going barefoot and no cow pies to step in. ha ha
I vaguely remember my bubbe having a christmas tree once and didn't seem to mess with it much anymore nor did she decorate either. Maybe I just imagined she had a tree not sure.

She concentrated on chanukah and I will share more on that another time. Although she always made christmas special by coming to our house on christmas eve anyhow and sharing the night with us kids.

I hated cold then and hate it now but still wasn't going to be left out going to do chores and milk cows. My favorite part was the kitties in the barn coming for the cream poured in their dishes.

I remember for a long time we forsook the modern convenience of electricity even when it was available. Candles,kerosene and lantern lights were what we used. We were used to it so wasn't a complaining matter.

Even during Christmas we had chores to do and those we did. I enjoyed helping with milking as I mentioned earlier, playing with the kids and carry buckets to feed and water the animals.
I didn't so much like cleaning the stalls and pens but did my best anyhow.
It was always a pleasant treat after chores and dinner to dress really warm and have my dad hitch up the horses for a hay ride.

I never much cared for gathering eggs. I hated the chickens who wanted to peck me and was too good natured to thump them one.

Gathering wood for the stoves was a constant chore. We spent all year gathering, cutting, and stacking wood for the colder months. Sometimes we burned coal with the wood for a fire that lasted longer. I remember later on having a furnace that burned coal. I remember also it exploded or something because my mom came upstairs covered in soot. Thankfully no one was injured. Since I was too little at the time to go down to the basement didn't really get to see what happened nor was it elaborated on.

Whether doing chores, playing or a hay ride this time of year always brought a song to my heart and lips.

Sometimes I got to ride along to town for getting coal and groceries. I loved going to the store and surveying all the items especially in stock at Christmas time. Remember it was usually sub zero temps so getting to town and warming up was pleasant as much as getting home and warming up by the stove in the kitchen. And best of all was the time as a family, gathering around the table of most delicious food mom had prepared. She didn't rely on conveniences we have today to prepare our food. I think I didn't really appreciate what I had until getting a bit older.
I will call this an end to part of 1.
Next I will share my thoughts and memories of santa. Until then stay warm and cozy.

This venerable and much honored WW II vet is well known in Hawaii for his seventy-plus years of service to patriotic organizations and causes all over the country. A humble man without a political bone in his body, He has never spoken out before about a government official, until now.
He dictated this letter to a friend, signed it and mailed it to the president.

Dear President Obama,

     My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year. People meeting me for the first time don't believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert.

I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos'n Mate. Now I live in a "rest home" located on the western end of Pearl Harbor , allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.

One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.

So here goes.

I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.

I can't figure out what country you are the president of.
You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like:
             " We're no longer a Christian nation"
             " America is arrogant" - (Your wife even
                 announced to the world," America is mean-
                 spirited. " Please tell her to try preaching
                 that nonsense to 23 generations of our
                 war dead buried all over the globe who
                 died for no other reason than to free a
                 whole lot of strangers from tyranny and
                 hopelessness.)
I'd say shame on the both of you, but I don't think you like America, nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this country has given you. To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House.

After 9/11 you said," America hasn't lived up to her ideals."

Which ones did you mean? Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British? Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man, that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War? I hope you didn't mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.

I don't think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination. You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.

Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man.

Shape up and start acting like an American. If you don't, I'll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue . You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves.

And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don't want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts , who was putting up a fight? You don't mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don't want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.

One more thing. I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you're the Commander-in-Chief now, son. Do your job. When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him. But if you're not in this fight to win, then get out. The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you're thinking of.

You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president.
You're not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy. That's not our greatest threat. Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now.
And I sure as hell don't want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle.

Learn more about the FFA representatives you'll see New Year's morning on RFD-TV's "FFA Today" Float at the Tournament of Roses Parade LIVE from Pasadena, CA.

This week we profile Alexandria Henry, the newly elected National FFA Organization's 2009-2010 Eastern Region Vice President, and Representatives from each of the 18 states in the FFA Eastern Region who will join Henry on the parade route.

Alex Henry has developed her passion for agriculture, leadership and service throughout her life; passions that have only been strengthened through her involvement in FFA. Henry, the daughter of Burt and Cheryl Henry, is 20 years old and hails from the Alma FFA Chapter of Alma, Michigan. She is currently a junior at Michigan State University majoring in Agricultural and Natural Resource Communications and Agricultural Education. Henry's career goal is to serve as the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

The FFA Eastern Region is comprised of 18 states including: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.
